Test excavation was carried out on the site of a proposed new dwelling-house at Keadew, Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan, on 3 June 2004. The development site is located immediately south-west of an impressive rath situated on the south-east end of the summit of a high ridge with extensive views. The north part of the development site is located within the area of archaeological constraint around this monument. Testing comprised the mechanical excavation of four 30m-long trenches on the footprint of the development. The stratigraphy was uniform across the tested area: light-brown sandy silt topsoil, 0.3m deep, overlying mottled grey and yellow/brown clayey sand subsoil. No archaeological material was discovered.
