Pre-development monitoring was carried out at the site of a proposed development of townhouses at College Street in Cavan town.
Topsoil was removed using a large tracked mechanical digger with a 2m-wide toothless ditching bucket. Approximately two-thirds of the site had been mechanically excavated and all topsoil removed a couple of decades ago. The remaining third only contained 0.1m of topsoil below the sod. While a considerable amount of modern and 19th-century pottery was visible in areas that had been disturbed, it was clear that they had been part of material dumped over the site replacing the removed topsoil. This activity took place within the last 30 years. No finds were recovered from the areas that had not been disturbed.
Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered during monitoring
