The grant of planning for the development of a site located at Church Street/Cock Hill, Cavan, required that testing be undertaken in advance of the commencement of construction works.
Following the completion of all demolition works and the lifting of all floor surfaces/ground slabs, five trenches were excavated across the site. In all cases the trenches were cut through the formation material associated with the previous floor/ground surfaces. This material lay upon a buried topsoil horizon which was 43–230mm in thickness and which lay directly upon the natural subsoil. The only truncation of these layers was due to the excavation of foundation and services trenches associated with the previous buildings on the site.
No features of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of the testing.
