Monitoring of groundworks associated with the construction of a detached residence at Clonygoose, Borris, was undertaken on 17 September 2003. The development site is situated on, or immediately to the north of, the site of SMR 22:7, a possible megalithic tomb. The monument is recorded as consisting of a large cairn of boulders which, although likely to be the result of field clearance, may be masking an earlier megalithic structure. No remains associated with archaeological activity or later field clearance are now visible at the site of the possible monument.
No archaeological features or deposits were encountered during the monitoring. Topsoil with an average depth of 0.3m was removed throughout the area of construction impact. Topsoil directly overlay the natural subsoil, which consisted of yellow/orange, relatively compact silty clay with inclusions of granite boulders.
