Pre-construction testing was undertaken on the site of a proposed extension to the rear of a building fronting Kennedy Street, Carlow. Three trenches were opened on the imprint of the building. No features, either archaeological or modern, were exposed. What has been revealed is a considerable infilling of the area over recent centuries and this action can be construed as part of a major reclamation scheme. No building is recorded on this site until the first-edition OS map of 1839, when the area was known as the Coal Market. This tied in with the building detritus discovered in the trenches, which contained nothing dating earlier than the 19th century.
