Testing was carried out at Centaur Street, Carlow, on 18–19 March 2003. The proposed development involves the construction of a mixed-use development and penthouse. The site lies within the archaeological zone of potential for the medieval town. Five trenches were machine-excavated over a two-day period, located within the yard or green spaces, to limit inconvenience to the running of the existing manufacturing plant. Testing exposed a relatively consistent stratigraphy throughout the site. Previous groundworks in the area had raised the original ground level by importing rubble fill to prevent against seasonal flooding. This layer was, on average, over 1m thick. Despite these groundworks, three features were uncovered. These included a stone-lined culvert and two foundation walls. All appeared to be post-medieval/19th-century in date.
