Monitoring of development works took place at the above site located within the zone of archaeological potential as identified for the town of Carlow. Following initial site clearance a deposit of dump material was removed from the surface of the site to a depth of between 0.4 and 0.9m. The site was then subdivided into two areas: Block A in the east and Block B in the west.
Block A was reduced to a depth of 2m to the surface of the underlying natural subsoil. Two deposits consistent with 19th- and 20th-century reclamation were identified. Block B was reduced to a depth of 1.65m, exposing natural sandy gravels and riverine deposits. An additional deposit relating to 18th- and 19th-century reclamation was identified in this block. No artefacts or stratigraphy of an archaeological nature were identified.
