Excavation were carried out at Rossana Lower from October 2001 to February 2002. Five enclosures and a number of ancillary features were excavated. Of the enclosures, two were bivallate, Areas B and H, and three had single ditches, Areas A, E and G.
On excavation, only one of the five enclosures was confirmed as archaeological. From the recovered material, it appeared to date from the 12th–13th century. The two bivallate enclosures (B and H) and the single-ditch enclosure (G) proved to be post-medieval, probably ornamental features; the status of the remaining enclosure is as yet unknown. Additional features found during the excavation included an urn burial, a cremated pit burial and numerous hearths.
