Investigations of the site of a proposed development were conducted at Brockagh, Glendalough, Co. Wicklow, from 3 to 5 July 2002. The development consists of a 168m2 tourist information office, car-parking spaces and ancillary works. As the site is within the constraint zones of Recorded Monuments and near the main ecclesiastical complex at Glendalough, a programme of extensive archaeological investigations was required.
Four test-trenches were opened by machine and then cleaned back and excavated by hand. The trenches were 20–30m long and 1.95m wide. Very limited archaeological activity was noted on the site: two sherds of local, glazed, medieval pottery were found in Trench 2, probably dating to the 13th/14th century. These were not associated with any archaeological features and can be considered as stray finds out of context.
