Monitoring of topsoil-stripping along the proposed route of the N11 Newtownmountkennedy– Ballynabarny Road Scheme resulted in the identification of an area of archaeological activity in the townland of Ballybeg, Co. Wicklow, at the southern part of the proposed route. The area was south of the Rathnew River, adjacent to the riverbank and the low-lying river flood-plain. The site consisted of two large spreads of burnt-mound material extending along the southern bank of the river, with a number of smaller features situated between them. Excavation of these features revealed two large trough features and a number of smaller subsoil-cut pits and stake-holes.
