Testing was carried out at 6 Court Street, Enniscorthy, in November 2002, before construction. Four test-trenches were excavated in the yard of the property, and three in the attached garden. No archaeological deposits or features were uncovered in the testing of the yard, which showed that the property had originally been excavated into the hillside, with subsoil being encountered immediately beneath the present yard surface at 0.1–0.2m deep.
The excavation in the adjacent garden showed that the original ground level was up to 2m higher than the present yard level. A cobbled surface and boundary wall were uncovered, consistent with property boundaries marked in Griffith’s Valuation map of c. 1850. China and clay pipe were found in association with these post-medieval features.
