Monitoring of groundworks for a housing development at Devlin Road, Mullingar, was undertaken in April 2002. All material was removed by a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothed bucket. Excavation for foundation trenches, service trenches and the line of a boundary wall was monitored. Topsoil and sod overlay an overburden of dumped material up to 0.2m deep, with plastics and other modern debris in the matrix. This consistently overlay a natural stratum of grey/brown, clayey sand with inclusions of small sub-round stones. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the monitoring.
