A previous assessment of the site by Rosanne Meenan (Excavations 1995, No. 268, 95E121) revealed the presence, just outside the town wall, of silt and organic deposits that may have been the fills of a medieval ditch. Excavation of an area measuring 3m by 3m, the base of a proposed lift shaft, was undertaken in October 2002, as the surviving medieval deposits would have to be removed to allow its construction. No finds were uncovered from the, presumably medieval, organic deposits and silt. Two unlined water channels, filled with oak bark chips and cattle horn-cores, were evidence of a post-medieval tannery overlying the medieval deposits.
