The site was on low-lying bogland in the townland of Ballinderry Whitewell, Co. Westmeath. A burnt mound containing decaying and burnt sandstone with a high frequency of charcoal was exposed during the trenching stages of gas-pipeline works. An area 3m wide and 24m long was exposed. The surrounding area was not directly affected by construction works and therefore was not excavated but was recorded and mapped. No trough was identified within the limits of the excavation. Environmental samples and charcoal were obtained from the fulacht material for analysis and radiocarbon dating.
