Testing was undertaken at a proposed development site at Lower Irishtown Road/Goldenisland Road, Athlone, on 15 April 2002. The site is within the zone of archaeological potential of Athlone, close to the line of the medieval road that ran east from the walled town and in a suburb that was mainly occupied by the native Irish during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Testing consisted of the mechanical excavation of four trenches. It revealed a layer of peaty soil, 1.2m deep, overlying a stiff clay marl, which is typical of the general area. No features or artefacts of archaeological/historical interest were uncovered.
