The site of this proposed development was within the zone of archaeological potential of Athlone town. An assessment was conducted on the existing building, and, although nothing of architectural interest was noted in the structure, it was recommended that testing be undertaken before development. Three trenches, all 1.5m wide and oriented east–west, were mechanically excavated. Trench A, at the south of the site, was 13m long and 1.1m deep. Trench B, in the centre of the site, was 12m long and 1.1–1.2m deep. Trench C, at the north of the site, was 13m long and 2.1–2.2m deep. The stratigraphy encountered consisted of topsoil overlying a disturbed stony subsoil, which lay above a natural marl or gravel layer. It was noticeable in Trenches A and B that the natural marl was closest to the surface at the northern end, suggesting that the original ground level fell from west to east. No finds or features of archaeological significance were encountered.
