Monitoring of topsoil-stripping on Spread 1B of the Pipeline to the West took place between 27 February and 17 May 2002. Spread 1B stretched over 57km from Kinnegad to Athlone, Co. Westmeath. The River Shannon and its tributaries drain this area. Most of the terrain along this section of the route was flat and poorly drained, with large tracts of peat bogland. Small-scale relief was evident in the form of glacial deposits such as eskers and moraines. A total of 31 sites were exposed during topsoil-stripping. These included a fulacht fiadh, a ring-barrow and a Bronze Age burial enclosure, which were excavated individually.
