Testing was undertaken at a proposed development site at Ardmore, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, from 16 to 19 September 2002. There are two ringforts within the boundary of the site (SMR 19:81, 19:82) and one to the immediate north (SMR 19:79). A programme of geophysical survey, undertaken by GeoArc Ltd in April and May 2002 (licence 02R055), identified a number of anomalies on the site. The purpose of the testing was to investigate these anomalies.

Fourteen trenches were excavated by a machine fitted with a toothless ditching bucket, after which investigations by hand were undertaken. These indicated that the anomalies either were the result of natural occurrences, such as iron panning or the accumulation of soil at the base of hillocks owing to soil-creep, or were caused by activities such as ploughing, drainage or the construction and subsequent removal of field boundaries. No features or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered during the testing.
