Investigation by Niall Brady in January 2002 identified the source area of ship’s timbers recovered during maintenance dredging at Duncannon Bar in recent years (Excavations 2000, No. 1009, 00E0949). The site was a well-preserved timber shipwreck, with a complement of iron cannon. Further investigation by David McCullough in July suggested that the remains occurred over an area measuring 40m by 20m. Six iron cannon, four lead pots and a significant body of timberwork were exposed. Additional monitoring work recovered further timbers, away from the main site. Although the identity of the wreck is not yet clear, the evidence suggests that it is a 17th-century vessel. Two possible candidates emerge: the Great Lewis (1645) and the frigate Hastings (1697).
