Monitoring was carried out of groundworks for a proposed development comprising two plots of land on Penrose Lane, Waterford. The first plot was on the corner of Anne Street and Penrose Lane, and the second was on the west side of Penrose Lane. A building was identified beneath the modern surface fronting onto Anne Street. This had an adjacent slabbed yard and served an industrial function, as suggested by the presence of a large chimney base. The chimney dated to the later part of the 19th century and was the earliest discovery on the site. Elsewhere the undisturbed subsoil was identified directly below the foundations of the recently demolished buildings.
