Landscaping outside Dungarvan Castle involved resurfacing Castle Street and the castle approach, inserting street lighting and underpinning an old boundary wall. Pits for the underpinning of the wall and for four lamp-posts and the trench for a cable duct all cut through and brushed against the remains of metalled surfaces, clay floors and infilled clay pits from the medieval and early post-medieval town. Close liaison with the town engineer prevented unnecessary disturbance.
The removal of recent material from part of the curtain wall of the castle allowed clearer observation of the wall face. The remains of an early curtain wall can now be seen running to a corner far short of the south-west corner tower, modifying the shape of the early 13th-century castle.
