Testing was carried out on the proposed N25 Waterford Bypass. Site 9 was initially identified in the environmental impact statement as an area of high archaeological potential on the basis of an examination of the topographical nature of the scheme. The area was in the townland of Butlerstown North, on a gentle slope of low-lying pastureland defined to the west by Knockhouse stream, and potentially contained the remains of human settlement. The site extended from Chainages 1200 to 1700 along the proposed western link road corridor. Access to the site for the purposes of test excavation was denied, and the site remains unassessed. A geophysical survey, however, was permitted, and this was conducted over the entire site. It failed to identify any archaeological features. This site has not been assessed adequately, as the geophysical survey should be combined with test excavation to enable confirmation of the results.
