Testing, followed by a programme of monitoring, took place on the site of a proposed apartment development at Glebe View, Roscrea, between 10 December 2001 and 9 January 2002. Testing exposed nine tanning pits to the west of the site, near The Mall, on the River Bunow. The pits, part of Smallman’s tanyard, dating to the middle of the 19th century, were laid out in a grid and were c. 1.3m long, 1m wide and 1.3m deep. A total of 68 pits were exposed. All were filled with a woodchip liquor mixed in some cases with dung. A number of the pits were lined with clay. Other than this obvious evidence of industrial activity, there were no significant archaeological finds or deposits.
