Testing was carried out at Baurstookeen, Golden, Co. Tipperary, before the submission of a planning application to construct a community hall in the centre of Golden village. Much of the village of Golden, including the proposed development site, is in a zone of archaeological potential. The site is currently in use as a carpark. Two test-trenches were excavated. The sequence of strata showed that some levelling of the slope on the site had been carried out relatively recently; under the gravel surface a layer of post-medieval rubble, 0.4m thick, was revealed, which overlay a layer of buried topsoil. Comparison with the field immediately west of the proposed development showed that the development site probably originally had a much steeper slope from north to south than it does now.
