Test-trenches were cut on the north side of Chapel Lane and under a standing building at the junction of Chapel Lane and Main Street, Cashel, to assess the depth and survival of remains of the medieval town before redevelopment.
A shelf had been cut under part of the standing building in the 18th/early 19th century, removing a large amount of archaeological material, but, under half of the building, remains of medieval clay floors, timber partitions etc. appeared to survive in very good condition.
Clay floors and clay-bonded stone walls found beside Chapel Lane were probably the remains of late medieval buildings, beside the lane running to Moor Gate and the Friary.
A test-trench on the line of the town wall revealed mortared stonework, potentially part of the town wall. Further work will be undertaken here and elsewhere on the site in 2003.
