Monitoring took place of investigative groundworks in the townland of Ballyvinane, Co. Tipperary, in July 2002. The works involved the excavation of one borehole.
The site at Ballyvinane was discovered during aerial inspection as part of the assessment of the N8 route by Valerie J. Keeley Ltd, where it is referred to as Aerial Site A. The site was also inspected during the field-walking phase of the environmental impact statement, where it is referred to as Site 22.
During aerial inspection for this scheme a possible circular enclosure was noticed, planted with trees. The site is not marked on the first-edition OS map for the area. It is marked on the second-edition OS map but not as an SMR site. The site is in a small field, directly south-west of the Thurles–Littleton road. It measures 25m by 20m by 2m deep and consists of a circular hollow cut into the top of a low rise. There is no evidence of a surrounding bank. On inspection it was concluded that this site is of no archaeological significance and is most likely a small clay quarry (C. Ó Drisceoil, pers. comm.).
Monitoring took place on 10 July 2002. The borehole was positioned to avoid the upstanding feature as much as possible. It was situated in the field across the road, north-north-east of the possible enclosure, and was excavated using a percussion-coring rig fitted with a 150mm coring bit. No material of archaeological significance came to light.
