Monitoring of topsoil-stripping on a greenfield site was carried out as part of the realignment of a section of road 1km north-east of the seaside village of Enniscrone, Co. Sligo. The works concentrated along a section 520m long and a maximum of 30m wide. The site is 65m and 35m to the south of two earthen ringforts.
There was no evidence of any archaeological remains on the site. All of the sod and topsoil were removed to a maximum depth of 0.5m. Two shallow linear ditches were exposed after the removal of the topsoil. They were similar in shape and width and extended beneath the line of the land-take; their length was not established. The ditches were 135m apart and were not aligned on the same axis. Their shallowness, 0.1m and 0.16m deep, suggested that they had no archaeological significance. No datable finds were retrieved, and nothing else of note was found during the monitoring works.
