Monitoring of groundworks for the laying of foul and storm pipes began in November 2001 and continued through January 2002. The first stage of the Sligo Main Drainage Scheme, Pearse Road Contract, began midway along Pearse Road. Pearse Road is at the south of the town and is one of the main approach roads into Sligo. Monitoring was undertaken of ground disturbance as part of the scheme. The pipeline route was 630m long. The trenches were 2.4–2.5m wide and 1.9–2.1m deep. The entire route extended along the existing public road. There was no instance where it impinged on recorded archaeological monuments. No archaeological remains were uncovered. The road was built directly onto naturally deposited subsoils and boulder clay.
In addition to the works along Pearse Road, further pipe-laying works were carried out in and around the Sligo docks in spring 2002. No recorded archaeological sites are within or near the area of the works along the docks. The excavation for the pipe laying extended through ground that had been reclaimed from the sea to build the docks. The likelihood of finding archaeology was remote, but particular attention was paid to the possibility of uncovering wrecks. Nothing of an archaeological nature was uncovered.
