Three test-trenches were excavated across a site at the junction of O’Connell Street and Lower Knox Street, Sligo. A number of walls were uncovered that related to recently demolished buildings. Examination of the associated foundation trenches revealed that they were probably constructed in the 18th or 19th century. They had been dug through deposits of dark brown, organic soil, which were particularly deep, up to 0.3m, in the south-western corner of the development area. Despite the proximity of the site to the location of Sligo Castle, nothing of archaeological significance was recovered during the testing.
