Monitoring of the underpinning of the walls of buildings to the north and south of the development was carried out in November 2002. Trenches, c. 2m wide and extending to the centre of the site, were excavated to bedrock, and the foundations exposed were underpinned with concrete. One area of modern shed wall was demolished without being underpinned.
The walls bordering the development were constructed of random rubble and red brick and bonded with lime mortar. The foundations were quite loosely constructed, and some collapsed when exposed. They generally extended to c. 1m below ground level. The stratigraphy encountered did not differ from that recorded during testing (No. 1672, Excavations 2002), comprising several mixed rubble layers and a sandy clay layer yielding modern pottery, clay pipe, blackware and animal bone. Bedrock was reached at c. 4m at the Holborn Street end and c. 3m toward the centre of the site. Works on the site are continuing. All further ground reduction on the site is to be monitored.
