Monitoring of two engineering trial-pits took place in August 2002 on the site of a proposed development involving the demolition of existing buildings on the site and the construction of a number of retail units. A wall was found running north–south, 0.5m wide and constructed of roughly hewn limestone. It appeared to be the eastern boundary wall of the plot to the rear of 61 John Street.
In Trial-pit 2, excavated in the Tesco carpark, the loose rubble remains of a wall running east–west were uncovered beneath a layer of builder’s rubble. Just to the south, the remains of a red-brick sewer pipe were exposed. Further monitoring of the engineering trial-pits was carried out by Anne Carey under the same licence (see No. 1668, Excavations 2002).
