The test excavation of a development site at Curraghnagap, Easky, Co. Sligo, was carried out on 12 and 13 June 2002. The proposed development is within the constraint zone of an abbey, SMR 11:21. It consisted of the construction of a two-storey building to accommodate enterprise units, a new community centre, an access road and car-parking facilities. The site was in a field under pasture to the rear of buildings fronting onto Main Street, Easky. Three trenches were excavated by machine.
The stratigraphy in Trenches A and B was topsoil, 0.3–0.5m thick, overlying a friable, light brown/grey/orange subsoil with frequent stone, much of which was rotted, as high as 0.35m below the surface and 0.4–0.7m thick. Below the friable subsoil in Trench B was grey boulder clay, along the base of the trench in a 16m section at its south-south-east end. The friable subsoil was visible along the remaining length of the trench base. The stratigraphy in Trench C was tarmac and chippings, 0.1–0.3m thick, overlying topsoil, natural subsoil, bedrock and rubble fill. Within the topsoil, at 11.6m from the north-east end of the trench, was a small shell midden of mussels and cockles. The midden was visible only in the north-west section face, where it was 0.55m long and 0.43m thick.
