The test excavation of a site at Cregg, Co. Sligo, was carried out on 27 March 2002 because the proposed development is within the constraint zone of SMR 8:127, a non-extant rectangular enclosure. The development consisted of the construction of a house and effluent treatment system. The development had begun, with the dwelling partially built and the driveway in place, before the testing. This was reported to Dúchas, which recommended that those areas of the development not yet disturbed, the proposed driveway and percolation area, be tested. Two trenches were excavated by machine. The stratigraphy in both trenches comprised topsoil, 0.2–0.25m thick, over sandy subsoil. No artefacts were recovered. The testing revealed natural, undisturbed stratigraphy. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
