Test excavation at Carrigans Lower, Ballymote, in April 2001 revealed one or two possible cultivation ridges near the western edge of the development area (Excavations 2001, No. 1143). These may date from the period of use of the cashel in the field to the south. However, as their alignment matches the western and eastern field boundaries and a field boundary down the middle of the field marked on the 1837 first-edition OS map, they may be much more recent. Three fragments of modern crockery noted close to the undisturbed underlying glacial deposits may indicate that the furrows are modern.

In May 2002 the completion of the placing of the sewerage system was monitored. There were no archaeological finds, and no evidence of the date of the ridges was revealed.
