The site of the proposed development, a new national school, is within an archaeological complex that includes the Rathcroghan royal site. The exact locations of the school and related services had yet to be determined, as the archaeological nature of the site had not been established. For this reason, the entire part of the field that may be affected by the proposed development has been tested. Eight trenches, measuring 60m by 1.5m and oriented north–south, were excavated by machine to the level of undisturbed natural. No archaeological features or finds were uncovered.
