Two trial-trenches were excavated at the site of a proposed retail development at the rear of Main Street, Roscommon, on 25 July 2002. A poorly preserved and partly collapsed stone kiln was found in Trench 2, in the northern part of the site. It comprised a slightly curved drystone wall with a thin lime render on the inner face and had an estimated diameter of 1.2m. There was evidence of heat damage at the eastern end of the feature. The remains of the kiln will be preserved in situ during the development.
