The site of the proposed quarry development consisted of a substantial north–south-oriented esker. It was near a dramatically situated motte and bailey and a later stone quarry. The entire esker will be removed through quarrying. All topsoil-stripping was monitored. Two small cut features were exposed and later excavated (No. 1601, Excavations 2002, 02E1158). No other archaeological features were revealed.
