This development, on the south side of Military Road, midway between Boyle Cistercian Abbey and King House, was tested by Anne Carey (No. 1588, Excavations 2002). Monitoring of further groundworks and topsoil removal was undertaken by the writer.
There were no further archaeological discoveries. The north–south wall that had been discovered was concealed and then covered by at least 1m of soil, and the houses were built on concrete rafting. Ms Carey had exposed only c. 1.5m of the wall, but monitoring established that it was at least 12.6m long. The black soil just east of the southern end of the wall contained many broken bottles, including one advertising ‘Ryan Chemist Boyle’.
The retaining wall will also remain undisturbed, as the ground levels here will be raised, and infrastructure pipes will be laid in this imported material and rafted over.
