An artefact was uncovered during the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit survey in 2001. It was originally thought to have been a dug-out canoe but on closer inspection resembled a large trough. The trough was situated in Ballybeg Bog, c. 150m from the dryland edges. It lay upside down and had broken into several pieces. Its base had been milled away. It measured 0.39–0.48m in external width, 0.3m internally and 1.36m in maximum length. It has been identified as alder (Alnus glutinosa), a species frequently used in the manufacture of wooden troughs. Remains of the trough were found lying around the area.
