The developer proposed to erect four two-storey apartment buildings, with street-level retail units, on this site. The planning authority required a walkway from the site across the line of the town wall as part of the development.
An assessment of this site and a survey of the part of the town wall that forms the western boundary of the site were required. Testing was undertaken. Seven of the nine trenches proposed were excavated. Some of these extended to 3m from the remains of the town wall; others ran along the north and south boundaries of the site, which represent the medieval burgage-plot boundaries. None of the trenches revealed archaeological material.
The remaining two trenches were deferred pending demolition of the modern business premises that stand on the street front.
