Testing was carried out before construction of the M4 Kinnegad–Enfield–Kilcock Motorway. In February 2002, during centre-line testing of the proposed realignment of the Edenderry Road carried out by Ian Russell (No. 1876, Excavations 2002, 02E0108), a number of possible archaeological features were identified. The site was designated Rossan 5 and was excavated in August 2002.
Sixteen features were exposed on this site. On excavation, none was found to be of an archaeological nature. All appeared to be related to agricultural and drainage activity in this field. Slag was identified both in the topsoil and in one of the features, but it appeared to represent dumping of material rather than evidence of in situ metalworking. Given the modern nature of the features, it is likely that the slag is also of modern origin.
