The proposed development entailed raising the existing land at Ratoath, Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath, by c. 1m for drainage purposes by introducing a mixture of subsoil and topsoil over the area. An area 10m wide and spanning the length of the site, adjacent to its southern boundary, will not be subject to infilling. It is also intended to strip topsoil from the drier, northern end of the site. This topsoil will be reinstated after the deposition of the fill material. The existing site entrances will be used. The land is currently used for pasture and is very waterlogged, with bad drainage.
One area of archaeological potential was identified, during inspection of aerial photographs, as a dark, roughly circular area, measuring c. 4m in diameter. It was recommended that a programme of testing be undertaken to assess its potential.
Two test-trenches were mechanically excavated on 19 March 2002. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted during the testing.
