This site at Lagore Little, Co. Meath, was identified and partially exposed as a burnt spread during topsoil-stripping in the same field as No. 1486, Excavations 2002, but 83m to the west. This spread of classic firing material abutted the edge of the pipeline corridor. The main concentration was confined to an area of 5m by 6m, which, after cleaning, showed a distinct density in an area of 5m by 2m, centred on the main spread.
Excavation proved relatively inconclusive. The spread of firing material in this and on the adjacent site suggests a short period of usage. Associated with the spread were two cut features. F3 was at the eastern side of the spread. It was subrectangular, measuring 1.9m east–west by 0.6m, and survived to a maximum depth of 0.25m. The fill was composed of two distinct layers. The primary fill was a humic, silty deposit that lined the cut. The upper fill was mainly subsoil that had slumped into the cut and settled to form a distinct fill.
F6 was oval, measuring 0.87m north–south by 0.78m, and survived to a maximum depth of 0.18m. The fill was a single, homogeneous deposit of firing material.
Both features were cut into the natural and were associated with the spread of firing material on the surface. There appeared to be a denser deposit of firing material between the two cut features. This may indicate an overlap in the deposition of burnt-mound material during different periods of use.
