A linear feature was defined by concentrated charcoal deposits and substantial fragments of burnt wood. The feature has been disturbed and truncated by localised plough action. It was found in association with other, clearly post-medieval features and deposits of red brick. Local tradition refers to this area as ‘Cromwell’s Avenue’. It apparently corresponds to an original access route to Gormanston College. The red brick and charred wood may be the remains of a gatelodge. The identified feature gave the appearance of being a burnt structural timber associated with this building.
