Monitoring was carried out during groundworks associated with the construction of a section of stone wall on the southern perimeter of the ‘Tower Garden’ in the grounds of Corbalton Hall, constructed in 1801 to the design of Francis Johnston but considered to have been built onto an earlier structure. Excavation carried out by Helen Kehoe (Excavations 2001, No. 956, 01E0804) uncovered the basement of Johnston’s building, which was destroyed in 1970. An L-shaped trench was dug to a depth of 0.5m with a 2ft (0.6m) bucket along the course of the proposed foundation. The trench cut through dumped red brick, discarded piping and gravel material. No archaeological features or finds were uncovered.
