Excavation was carried out from 27 to 29 May 2002 on a site at Arodstown, Co. Meath, as part of the Bord Gáis Éireann Pipeline to the West project (Section 1A: Ballough to Kinnegad). The site, revealed during monitoring of topsoil-stripping, was recorded as patches of disturbed burnt and heat-shattered stone, ash and charcoal, spread over an area of c. 40m2.
The excavation uncovered the truncated remains of a fulacht fiadh with a subcircular trough, a thin burnt spread downslope from it and two shallow pits to its east and south-east. The burnt spread measured 5m (east–west) by 4m and was 0.01–0.08m thick. It varied in nature across its length, with four distinct, if thin, deposits in its matrix. The trough was a subcircular pit. It measured 1.5m (north-west/south-east) by 1.2m by 0.4m in maximum depth and was cut entirely into the natural. Three distinct fills were evident in both plan and section. No artefacts were recovered from any of the features.
