Testing before pipe routing within the protected area of ecclesiastical remains was undertaken in August 2002. The site was investigated as part of the Ballyhaunis Water-Supply Augmentation Scheme (No. 1374, Excavations 2002, 02E0522). The testing zone was 140m long, 25m wide and c. 50m from the ecclesiastical remains.
Testing was conducted mechanically and involved the stripping of sod and topsoil to sterile boulder clay. The test area was highly disturbed by modern construction activity. A thin cover of topsoil rested on a layer of redeposited gravel/boulder clay. A range of modern rubbish was found throughout this deposit. No features or finds of archaeological significance were uncovered.
