Topsoil removal and pipe laying associated with the Ballyhaunis Water-Supply Augmentation Scheme are being monitored. The project involves pipe laying in Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, and includes the construction of a reservoir and valve houses. Work began in June 2002 and is continuing at the time of writing in February 2003.
The scheme is c. 10km long, and the pipeline wayleave is 15–25m wide. The areas being monitored include undulating pastureland, low-lying marsh, existing roadway and roadside verge. At many locations along the pipeline route, land has been disturbed by drainage, land reclamation, urban development, agricultural activity and local water schemes.
Pre-development testing under licences 02E0729 and 02E0730 (Nos 1391 and 1385, Excavations 2002) has taken place within the protected areas of two monuments. One new site, a fulacht fiadh in Devlis townland, was identified during monitoring. The site was excavated before pipe laying under licence 02E1777 (No. 1387, Excavations 2002).
