Monitoring of the groundworks associated with the construction of an extension to the Old Schoolhouse, Tallanstown, was carried out over a number of days in September and October 2002. The existing building dates from the first half of the 19th century. Monitoring was required because of the proximity of the development to a motte and bailey, 160m to the north of the site.
Monitoring revealed the foundation trenches of a demolished outbuilding of modern date, which had resulted in heavy ground disturbance of the area of development. A range of modern ceramics and associated building debris were recovered during the soil-stripping. Subsoil was exposed c. 0.5m below the existing surface level. No features of archaeological significance were revealed, and the only finds were of modern date.
