An excavation was carried out to retrieve the contents of a possible stone cist, which was contained within the matrix of a cairn in Fieldstown, Monasterboice, Co. Louth. A stone slab, thought to be the capstone of the cist, was visible at the top of the cairn before excavation. The slab was loose, with a discernible gap between it (at the north-eastern corner of the slab) and the surface of the cairn. Excavation revealed that the slab was partially lying in the cairn material and thus contemporary with the mound. There was no evidence of a cist structure beneath the slab, and no artefacts or human remains were contained in the area of the excavation.
